Nan's Pneumonia

In 1920, when my Nan was 5, she fell unwell at school. The office telephoned home to collect her, but nobody answered, so they sent her off to walk the 2 miles alone.

Can you imagine if this happened in a school today? Most of our kids can't even get a grazed knee without a four page document being filed!

It turned out Nan had pneumonia. Soon after, she was packed away to a convalescence home, for a couple of months, alone. She felt afraid and desperately missed home.

My mum reminded me of this story and how it had shaped my nan's life for better and worse.

Now Nan is in a good care home. Pictured here receiving a gift from Santa.

Soon she will be 101. Sadly, due to the current state of Corona, we won't be able to visit.

We can learn a lot from our elders and how they dusted themselves off from dramas, or not. Their resilience bolstering stories can be added to our toolkit and used as required.

Encourage your kids to question them and us, they may like to record their interviews in journals, audios or videos, to refer and reflect on regularly.

We can also learn from our children's stories too, so gather round and listen to each other, appreciatively.
